5 slices of bread and willing participants in their own torture

Below is a reflection by Cathy Buckle on life in Zimbabwe

Dear Family and Friends,

Sixty-one days into Zimbabwe’s Covid 19 lockdown, I went into the supermarket early in the morning. There was thick mist and it was cold and muggy. The infrared forehead thermometer at the door wasn’t working (because it’s cold, the lady said) but masks were on and hands were squirted. I’d heard that prices had gone mad and so I knew that this would probably be “phone shopping” where I just take pictures of prices and do adding up as I try and  work out what I can afford to buy. I wasn’t alone in the adding up department.

Two young men were going shelf to shelf to see what they could afford. The bag of chicken pieces was rejected with exclamations at the price; the tiny square of cheese was turned over and put back; the packet of “budget beef bones” was too expensive, the loaf of bread was too much as was the bag of biscuits and finally, they picked up the small bag of “5 slices.” Five slices of white bread, wrapped in a clear plastic bag and called: ”School Pack 5 slices” was priced at Z$11.49. The reality of Z$2.29 for each precious slice of bread was deeply shocking. 14 months ago when the Zimbabwe government converted all our US dollars to Zimbabwe dollars at the rate of one to one, a whole loaf of bread, with 18 slices, cost less than one dollar. The majority of people here don’t have access to anything except Zimbabwe dollars and bread has become a luxury most cannot afford.

Sixty-one days into lockdown the struggle to survive for the majority of Zimbabweans who live from hand to mouth is unbearable. The government has eased the lockdown for businesses but not for informal traders who have now spent two months unable to do anything to earn a living and support their families. In 2018 a study by the IMF showed that Zimbabwe has the second-largest informal sector in the world and now all these men and women are just sitting at home: helpless, hungry, desperate. A friend I met who was trying to do furniture upholstery to survive lockdown was woken in the night to find that there was a burglar and all his upholstery tools had been taken. He has no chance of replacing any of them because when lockdown started two months ago you needed 40 Zimbabwe dollars to buy one US dollar; today you need 70 Zimbabwe dollars to buy one US dollar. Inflation is presently estimated to be over 900% by international economist Prof Steve Hanke at Johns Hopkins University.

As if to divert our attention from the shocking reality of the collapsing state of our country, the horrific story of the abduction, torture, abuse and sexual assault of three MDC women I wrote about a fortnight ago continues. Soon after the women were found, rescued and hospitalized, the sickening comments by people in our government began.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Energy Mutodi said on Twitter:
“Details emerge MDC youths Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova & Cecilia Chimbiri went out for a romantic night to Bindura with their lovers who are artisanal miners. They parked their car at a police station for safety but tragedy struck when they demanded foreign currency for services.” Mr Mutodi was fired a few days later.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana posted this on Twitter: “It is a diversionary tactic. A poorly choreographed attempt to throw a curveball at the system,” but a little later Mr Mangwana said this wasn’t the official government position and that he was quoting a “troll.”

Next came the arrest of two journalists, Frank Chikowore, (freelance) and Samuel Takawira (263Chat). They spent four nights in jail after going to the hospital to interview the three MDC women who were recovering from injuries sustained during their abduction and torture. The two journalists were charged with violating coronavirus lockdown regulations.

Then came the Foreign Affairs Minister, S B Moyo, who said that the three women were most likely to be “victims of a third force” or were “willing participants” in a “stage-managed theatre.”  Willing Participants? Abducted from a police station, hooded, beaten, abused and sexually assaulted with a firearm and you are “willing participant”? Yet again Zimbabwe has no words, but wait, it gets even more unbelievable.

The three victims: MP Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri were then charged, in their hospital beds, for taking part in a demonstration, breaching Covid 19 lockdown regulations and promoting public violence. To date, the perpetrators have not been identified, located or arrested. Zimbabwe has maintained its reputation of being a place where victims are treated as perpetrators.

MDC 3, Bed ridden, but viciously Dragged to Court by ZANU PF

Zimbabwe Freedom of Expression has received reliable reports that Bed ridden MP Joanna Mamombe, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Youth representatives Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova (MDC 3), have been dragged to court in Zimbabwe.

MDC 3
It seems the court session was held in the Hospital where they are currently recovering from the horrific injuries they sustained in their alleged abduction.

This act by Jurists likely shows the ultimate grip ZANU PF  has on the courts and arguably makes the Jurists State proxies.  This also likely shows, their utter callousness and blatant disregard for the Human Rights of MDC members and supporters and the lack of simple decency that one expects, such as allowing the MDC 3 to recover first.

Fairness and equality seems to be lacking in the Government of Zimbabwe's use of State resources, especially in the way MDC female members are treated by the regime, as this is not an isolated incident.

Court in Session in Hospital
Although there have been joint letters by heads of missions, first hand statements by victims, revulsion by the international community and the diaspora, ZANU PF and its proxies can not help themselves, but do what they do best, which is to use everything in their power to inflict as much pain and suffering on the MDC, its members and its supporters.

International News Organisation, Channel 4 has covered this, therefore bringing the continued perpetual disregard for Human Rights, torture, rape, abduction and persecution of Zimbabweans especially the women, by the ZANU PF controlled State to the attention of the international community.

Part of the Channel 4 report reads as follows,
The charges were laid out today in a special court inside hospital, where the women are recovering from their alleged abduction and torture at the hands of what they suspect were special security forces. A warning – viewers may find some of their testimony distressing.

The charging of the MDC 3 has also been confirmed by the United States Embassy (US Embassy) in Zimbabwe.  This has been done on the US Embassy twitter handle @USEmbassyHarare

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights have also confirmed that the MDC 3 have indeed been formerly charged in court and granted bail conditions.

The final nail in the, "ZANU PF appologist in the diaspora coffin," was the article by Newsday Zimbabwe.  The article in Newsday Zimbabwe makes it clear that at the time of writing, the regime actually dragged bed ridden MP Joanna Madamombe to court and remanded her in custody and intended to put onerous bail conditions on her.

The saddest part of the twitter thread is that, it was conveniently confirmed by ZLHR and non of the usual ZANU PF supporters, especially Nick Mangwana and Energy Mutodi responded to the comments and the article, which if supported by ZLHR is highly, likely based on facts which are irrefutable as Lawyers are officers of the Court.

ZANU PF has really showed that they have indeed captured the Judiciary.  For a case such as this to be moved forward, without any investigation of what happened to the MDC 3, likely shows the undebatable and undoubtedle bias that the ZANU PF Judiciary have when it comes to the rights of people who do not support the ZANU PF Junta Regime.

In conclusion, I still but wonder why there are Thousands upon thousands of Zimbabwean Women who are active members of the MDC and supporters of the MDC, in the diaspora, all over the world, without full refugee status and living in fear of deportation to the regime called ZANU PF that sticks rifles in the anal passage of Political opponents?

Abducted MDC MP and activists CHARGED

Zimbabwe Freedom of Expression has received reliable reports that MP Joanna Mamombe, MDC Youth representatives Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, have been formerly charged by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in the Zimbabwe Hospital where they are currently recovering from the horrific injuries they sustained in their alleged abduction.

This act by the ZRP who are known ZANU PF State proxies, shows, their utter callousness and blatant disregard for Human Rights.
the lack of simple decency seems to permeate throughout the bones of the ZANU PF regime and this is just one prime example.

Although there have been joint letters by heads of missions, first hand statements by victims, revulsion by the international community and the diaspora, ZANU PF and its proxies can not help itself.

Channel 4 has covered this, therefore bringing the continued perpetual disregard for Human Rights, torture, rape, abduction and persecution of Zimbabweans to the attention of the international community.

Police formally charge abducted MDC activists from their hospital beds

By:- newzimbabwe

POLICE have formally charged three female MDC Alliance activists who were abducted and tortured by suspected state security agents some two weeks ago for conducting a street demonstration during the country's lockdown period.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights confirmed Tuesday Harare West MP Joanna Mamombe, activists Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova will stand trial for "intent to promote public violence, breach of peace and breaking Covid-19 regulations under Statutory Instrument (SI99) of 2020".

The three are hospitalised at a private Harare hospital when they were allegedly subjected to acts of assault, torture and sexual abuse.

They were allegedly seized from the hands of the police at Harare Central by men who were driving an unmarked Noah and driven to a place outside Harare to face the horrendous acts.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi told parliament last week the three will face the music for the public demonstration they staged in Harare's Warren Park suburb.

They were protesting over government's failure to provide food and other necessities to millions of citizens who were taken off their sources of income when government decreed its lockdown against the spread of coronavirus.

Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo said Monday that while the state placed seriousness to claims of abuse by the activists, it would not refrain from its bid to prosecute the young politicians.
The activists have been asked to sign some warned and cautioned statements by the police.

Zimbabwe: Drop bogus charges against opposition leaders who suffered sexual assault

Zimbabwe: Drop bogus charges against opposition leaders who suffered sexual assault

27 May 2020

In response to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s decision to charge three female opposition MDC-Alliance party youth leaders for participating in peaceful protests against hunger during the lockdown period last month, Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southern Africa said:

“Joana Mamombe, Cecelia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova are victims of police brutality, sexual assault and enforced disappearance. "

Before charging them for allegedly breaking the lockdown rules, authorities must investigate the crimes against them.
“The charges against these three women are a travesty and ploy to intimidate the opposition and send a chilling message that anyone who challenges the government is putting themselves at risk.

“The Zimbabwean authorities should hold to account those suspected to be responsible for the enforced disappearance and sexual assault of the three female opposition leaders, rather than intimidating them with criminal charges. The charges should be dropped immediately.”

Background

The three leaders from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change – Alliance (MDC-Alliance) were disappeared after they were arrested at a roadblock in Warren Park guarded by police and soldiers on 13 May.

They were part of a demonstration organised against the authorities’ failure to provide social protection for the poor during the COVID-19 lockdown. They were later dropped in Bindura after they were subjected to sexual assault violence used as a method of torture and other human rights violations.

They were charged with participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence and breaches of the peace or bigotry as defined in section 37 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act among others.

Zimbabwe embraces Chinese advice on fighting COVID-19 pandemic

Source: Xinhua| 2020-05-26

HARARE, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe is very grateful for the practical advice and suggestions it received from a visiting team of Chinese medical experts and will use such knowledge in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Monday.
Speaking at a farewell ceremony for the team, Mutsvangwa said the solidarity from China at a time when the country continues to suffer from Western sanctions was commendable.

"We want to thank you so much for what you have been doing to make sure that Zimbabwe feels that it is not alone. We are a small economy. With the impact of illegal sanctions on our country, it will not be possible for Zimbabwe to go through this alone," Mutsvangwa said.

She said the country's inter-ministerial taskforce on COVID-19, as well as local medical professionals, benefited immensely from the two-week exchange program.

The country looks forward to continuous engagement and knowledge sharing with China on how to fight the pandemic, she said.

"The visit is a pure demonstration of the deep relations between Zimbabwe and China. We were lucky as Zimbabwe to have had this opportunity to get this team of 12 Chinese specialists who were actually in the forefront in China dealing with COVID-19 being in our country. We will certainly make use of their advice and suggestions to make sure that we continuously take interventions which protect the lives of people in our country," she said.

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care John Mangwiro said the visit was an important milestone in the further strengthening of health cooperation between Zimbabwe and China.
Zimbabwean health professionals and government officials benefited from knowledge about the virus and how to contain it using meager resources, he said.

"We learnt a lot. They taught us the anatomy of the virus, the physiology, the treatment and the usage of Western and traditional Chinese medicine. All those were very relevant," the deputy minister said.

He said Zimbabwe is keen to make sure the exchange program becomes a permanent arrangement in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Zimbabwe also sending its medical staff to learn from China's experiences.

"The exchange program must be on a continuous basis which should not end with the virus. It must continue forever because medicine is an exchange of knowledge and ideas," he said.
Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun said the exchange program symbolized win-win health cooperation between the two countries.

He said China shall stand by Zimbabwe until the pandemic is over.

"When faced with the COVID-19 pandemic as a major global health challenge, I would like to say that Zimbabwe will never walk alone. The Chinese government and its people will always stand firmly with Zimbabwe," he said.

"We would also like to keep up the momentum on trade and cooperation between China and Zimbabwe because we are fully aware that a functioning economy is vital to fighting against COVID-19," he said.

During its two-week mission, the team visited four provinces in the country and toured hospitals and health facilities to share knowledge and experience in fighting the pandemic.

They also donated medical equipment and supplies to some of the hospitals that they visited.

Zhu Yimin, leader of the Chinese medical team, said their visit was a fruitful and memorable experience.
"During our two-week stay, we had a chance to exchange ideas and based on what we saw, what we learnt and combined with our experiences in COVID-19, we proposed recommendations for COVID-19 control and prevention. We really hope that the recommendations will be of help to Zimbabwe in dealing with COVID-19," Zhu said.

He commended Zimbabwe's efforts in dealing with the pandemic, noting that the achievements were being made with limited resources.

Zimbabwe has to date recorded 56 cases of COVID-19, including 23 recoveries and four deaths.

Zimbabwe frees journalists held for 'coronavirus breach'

Zimbabwe frees journalists held for 'coronavirus breach'

The two Zimbabwean journalists arrested last week as they were investigating the abduction of three opposition party members have been released on bail, a lawyers' association said on Tuesday.

Frank Chikowore and Samuel Takawira, working for the online news outlet 263Chat, had been held on the grounds that they had breached Zimbabwe's anti-coronavirus social distancing rules.

"The magistrate granted them 500 Zimbabwe dollars ($20) bail each," Kumbirai Mafunda, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, told reporters.

The pair were "ordered not to interfere with witnesses and continue to reside at the addresses they gave the police until the matter comes to an end", he said outside the Mbare magistrate's court in the capital.

Chikowore and Takawira were arrested on Friday at a private hospital where they were conducting interviews with an opposition lawmaker and two party officials.

The three had been admitted to the hospital after being allegedly abducted and tortured by as-yet unidentified assailants.

Accused of not maintaining adequate social distancing between themselves and interviewees, the journalists were arrested by a police officer guarding the hospital and charged with breaching regulations to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The pair were initially denied bail on their first court appearance on Friday, sparking outrage from local media and rights groups.
Despite the government categorising journalism as an essential service during the lockdown, numerous journalists have been harassed and jailed in the landlocked country.

Last month a Zimbabwean high court ordered police to desist from arresting, detaining or interfering with the work of journalists providing coverage during the Covid-19 lockdown which began March 30 in the southern African country.

Zimbabwe has so far recorded 56 cases of the respiratory disease including four deaths.

ZANU PF Inspired by Nazis

on "Africa Day," as reports surface that they lack Ubuntu and are STARVING even the INNOCENT CHILDREN of Zimbabwe.

Award winning Journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono yesterday lamented the IMMINENT CLOSURE OF A (POP UP) KITCHEN for the needy in Epworth by the Mnangagwa government.  Epworth is a socially and economically deprived area in the South East, Harare Province and is part of the capital city of Zimbabwe.

Some of the great work being done by the ladies from the humble kitchen called, “Carol and Sandra's Epworth Kitchen”, @AndEpworth (whose Twitter Profile started on Friday 22nd of May 2020) includes, COOKING porridge, every morning, FOR FREE, FOR STARVING CHILDREN in Epworth.  The same CHILDREN had been FORCED through hunger, lack of a social security programs and the alleged theft of COVID 19 donated aid from UK, USA, EU and other countries by Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front(ZANU PF)TO EATING ROTTEN FOOD from bins.  The Children eating rotten food was what forced the two Angelic Women to sell what they had and start feeding the children at least a warm and healthy breakfast.

The two young ladies (Carol and Sandra) started the kitchen, as they were so touched by the sight of Children eating rotten food near some shops, as the children were so hungry.  They (The two young ladies) are said to have sold their clothes, shoes and other trinkets to start feeding the children.  After they started, what they had, was not enough to continue feeding the children, so they begged for donations from all over the world and they have since continued to pour in for them.  This however, this seems to have angered someone or some people in Mnangagwa’s shrewd Government.

One would naturally expect the government of Emmerson Mnangagwa, which has thus far received over USD$ 250 million in COVID-19 aid, to at least feed the hungry children and be happy if Zimbabweans are being resourceful enough to feed themselves.  The job of feeding the hungry in Zimbabwe is that of the Government, the same as it is the job of all governments all over the world, however, in Zimbabwe, the ZANU PF Government does not seem to want to feed the children of Zimbabwe.  They (ZANU PF) seem to believe that, this is not their responsibility.

Irrefutable evidence of ZANU PF’s brutal stinginess (Causing starvation) seems to have been left by Mayor Justice Wadyajena who tweeted during Christmas,
"It's folly to claim @ZANUPF_Official stole your Christmas! Things are tough but it's still your responsibility to put food on the table. Let's pull up our socks & do something for ourselves & country instead of accusing every successful person of being crooked. Merry Christmas."
Legally, It seems, Zimbabwe's Ratified, Treaty to the United Nations (UN) International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) (especially general comment 12), the right to adequate food, is being Ravaged and Violated by ZANU PF to the detriment of ordinary Zimbabwean children.  ZANU PF is doing this, even though it's illegal.  ZANU PF knows they have the Corrupted and Captured Justice System led by Justice Luke Malaba so, nothing will be done to them.

Given the above, one cannot help but wonder when the Finance Ministry of Zimbabwe and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, led by Mthuli Ncube and John Mangudya respectively,  will release social security money to the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.  Sadly The RBZ, the Ministry of Finance and the other parts of ZANU PF seem to be using the Children and the people of Zimbabwe as Pawns for them to loot.  The more they get, the more they loot, the more they want Zimbabweans to starve.

“The more the people suffer, the more they get, then, the more they loot.  The more they loot, the more they want Zimbabweans to starve, because then, the more they get and the more they loot.  The cycle continues” by Thabo Makuyana
In conclusion, From the 25th of May 2020, Africa Day, whilst you are having your breakfast, please spare a thought for the children of Epworth.  They are likely now starving, after the ZANU PF Government of Emmerson Mnangagwa, has closed their only source of a warm square meal (Breakfast is the most important meal, especially for children).  Spare a thought for the children who will be forced to go hungry or go and pick rotting or rotten food if there is any at all.  All this whilst Mthuli Ncube, a former Oxford Lecturer, a former London School of Economics Lecturer, educated in Cambridge, and University of the Witwatersrand, executes his greatest plans of mice and men, whilst he lives in the plush Meikles 5 Start hotel, at the tax payers expense and his children, eat, what their Momma made them.

Two Zimbabwean banks have been removed from the US sanctions list

RUSTENBURG - Two Zimbabwean banks have been removed from the US sanctions list, state media reported on Friday.

According to a report in daily newspaper The Herald, Agribank and the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) have now been fully removed from the US sanctions list, allowing them to do international business more easily and obtain lines of credit.

The two banks were put under US sanctions in July 2008. In April 2013, sanctions were partially lifted by the issuance of a licence permitting business with the two banks subject to limitations.
In February 2016, they were removed from the sanctions list, but the licence requirements remained. These have now been removed with effect from May 22 by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury, the daily reported.

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) reported that Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said the removal would help the banks access credit lines and remove any restrictions that pertain to know-your-customer challenges, which is what happens when a bank is in the spotlight.
"Now that they (sanctions) have been lifted, the banks will find it easier to do business going forward. So this is a very welcome development indeed," he said.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo said the lifting of sanctions on the two banks was
“a progressive and welcome development that is as a result of us finding each other’s chemistry between Zimbabwe and the US”.
He said Zimbabwe was looking forward to further progress in terms of lifting sanctions on other entities in the country.

Moyo said Zimbabwe had moved from a point where the two countries were not talking to a point of dialogue. He hoped that the sanctions would eventually be lifted as the country pursued its re-engagement initiatives.

What about the Zimbabwean Women and Children?

Mutodi Fired by E. D. Mnangagwa
without saying.  That is likely praising him, as if he was to spend one night in Joanna Mamombe's constituency, he'd surely lose more than just his little ego.

For him to laugh, joke, make light of and ridicule the abduction, torture, degrading treatment, sexual assault and rape of a sitting female MP, likely shows what kind of locker room talk him and his chums get up to; if the saying, "birds of a feather, flock together," is true and correct.

His chums in ZANU PF, not distancing themselves from him speaks volumes.  What he seems to not know is that, an attack such as that on one woman, especially an MP, like the one that the three ladies received from state actors, is an attack on the whole Parliament of Zimbabwe.

The same attack is also an actual attack on the constitution and the constituents of MP Joanna Mamombe.  Lastly, but most important of all, it is also an attack on all our Sisters, Nieces, Aunts, Female Cousins, Mothers and Grand Mothers too.

Mutodi going, might be ok for ZANU PF.  This is likely to deflect attention from MP Joanna Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri,, and Netsai Marowa.  It is likely not as a result of his actions, because if the regime was truly against, the treatment the three beautiful young ladies and countless other women and girls in Zimbabwe receive.  The court cases to prosecute the assailants would have started by now.

Further ZANU PF would never have suggested that they might face prosecution or arrest for protesting.

The fact that, nothing has started (in terms of the arrest or prosecution of the assailants), and they (ZANU PF) are mute on that point, speaks volumes.  Hidden within this, and hardly talked about is the police assault in Bulawayo of, two sisters Nokuthula and Ntombizodwa Mpofu who were allegedly brutally severely assaulted by police, which therefore shows a pattern of clear consistent, repetitive, propensity to harm those who are Women and Girls.  In my opinion, this shows a total lack of moral compass in the system called ZANU PF.

The same ZANU PF, had Mutodi and his future cell mate, Mangwana both squealed like pigs following the Chatham House, Water incident in London.  Yet in 2020, in Zimbabwe, the three young Women did not even put a molecule of water on anyone.  Yet the ZANU PF representative Energy Mutodi, has for a very, very long time acted with the same impunity the assailants have.

ZANU PF is what it is.  Horrible, Thuggery Personified; that has an unending thirst for, "orgies of violence," (as said by Jestina Mukoko) which they (ZANU PF) enjoy inflicting on innocent people for the sake of.................
Whilst ruling by fear, instead of by consent and just waiting for an outside Government or Governments to run their affaires for them.

The joint Joint statement on human rights situation in Zimbabwe, published on 20 May 2020 was:-

 “A joint local statement.”

From the Heads of Missions in, Harare on the abduction of a sitting MP and MDC Members Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova and alleged assaults on Nokuthula and Ntombizodwa Mpofu in Bulawayo.

The Heads of Mission expected,
  1. “A swift, thorough and credible investigation.”
  2. “The perpetrators of heinous acts of this kind and other human rights violations need to be identified and prosecuted.”
  3.  All political conflicts are to be resolved through constructive dialogue.
  4. International re-engagement is contingent on genuine and sustained implementation of political and economic reforms.

Linking the Two
It is as clear as day for all to see, that Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans are not in the best of situations at all during these times.  The statement has been made by the heads of missions.  The statement is very, very welcome, however, that's just it.

It is but just, "a statement made."

Yet, strangely enough, our Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Aunts and female cousins are not any safer at all, regardless of where they are.  Be they in the streets of Zimbabwe, in their own houses, in their bedrooms, or in the Hospitals of the United Kingdom, (where at one point, 30% of COVID-19 deaths were made up of those of Zimbabwean descent)

As another example, even in the U.K., there are so many Zimbabweans who have died as a result of fatigue and stress of working in healthcare settings.  More recently, they have died trying to save the lives of those suffering from COVID-19.  Yet, on the 24th of April, Zimbabwean Healthcare workers numbered 29 and their numbers have continued increasing day by day, yet the likes of Britain First and Nigel Farage are given the latitude platform and have the right to dictate the policies of the British Government.  The direct result of which is leading to a multitude of women and girls from African decent being among some of the most vilified, vulnerable and marginalised in society.

All this is while some of the migrants, as a part of their Home Office application to work in the UK, they would have been forced to pay the Immigration Health surcharge, whilst they work in the NHS, Nursing Homes, Care Homes and in the homes of the most vulnerable members of society, “on the Front Lines,” as the Mainstream media likes to call it.

The current UK Government now deciding to change the law for the said healthcare workers, is welcome, but in the UK, unfortunately for the Conservative Party, it all comes a little too late.  The policies that were implemented since the 6th of May 2010 have had their desired effects and it just goes to show the true nature of the hearts of those who implemented the policies.

In South Africa, which is host of the highest amount of Zimbabwean asylum seekers and migrants, the challenge, is so real.  The sad part is that, the sad legacy of apartheid lives on.  So the wealth inequality between the haves and the have not’s is just as real today as it was on the day, Nelson Mandela walked free and made his madden speech as the future President of, a Free South Africa.  Sadly though, there are some politicians who, instead of trying to create, jobs, jobs, jobs, and looking for real solutions, they are hell bent on populism against their own neighbours from one of the front line States.   Without doubt, yet again, Women and Children, are arguably the most marginalised.

In conclusion I really appreciate the gesture from the heads of mission.  I also really appreciate the coverage that Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans has and have had during the COVID-19 Global pandemic.  The questions that I have are,
  1. What’s next if there is no investigation?
  2. What’s next if there is no prosecution?
  3. What will the Zimbabwean Women, numbering less than 5000, fleeing the said violence, persecution, ridicule and possible deaths do, whilst they are in Europe, USA and the UK?
  4. Especially if the said women and girls seeking asylum in for example the UK continue to be subjected to waiting sometimes decades to continue their lives with full Humanitarian or Refugee rights in the UK immigration system.  Its sad that some have likely died as asylum seekers.
  5. Will COVID-19 change things for women from Zimbabwe all over the world, especially in Zimbabwe, as for sure, there is no place like home?
“Alas, unlike men, the body clock of women ticks by every second.”
And then they blame Bill Gates

Finally, All I ask for now, is real change.  I ask for, Real and tangible change for our Grandmothers, Mothers, Aunts, Sisters, and female cousins both in the Global First World West and in Africa, especially during these times of COVID-

Read Only¦ Zimbabwe Journalists Cry Out for More Freedom as VOA gives more coverage to Nick Mangwana

HARARE - Press freedom watchdogs say Zimbabwe’s government continues to stifle the media, despite promises by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to relax restrictions.

Kudzanai Musengi was arrested recently as he tried to record police enforcing the lockdown rules imposed by the government to contain the coronavirus.

Police said Musengi was filming them without a valid accreditation card. The government media commission has said the 2019 cards, however, of which Musengi was in possession, are valid until the 2020 cards are issued.

The freelance journalist says his arrest is an example of how authorities prevent journalists from doing their work.
“State security arms of government seem to operate in the world of their own," he told VOA. "Many a time, they harass, they arrest journalists, which is very worrying. We have seen an upsurge of these arrests especially during the lockdown.”

Human rights groups have recorded at least 15 arrests of journalists since Zimbabwe’s lockdown began in late March.  In most cases, police said the journalists were intruding in their operations.

Nick Mangwana, the secretary of Zimbabwe’s ministry of information, told VOA that some of the arrests during the lockdown are a result of a “misunderstanding.”  He says the government regards the media as part of the “essential services.”  He added that Mnangagwa’s government is ensuring that the journalists’ legal environment improves.
“If you check in the last two years, Zimbabwe is the only country that improved in accordance of Freedom House index," he noted. "We have clearly been a different government, especially in the new dispensation (aka new deception) to the previous one, in our approach to freedom of information, and as well to the freedom of the media.”

(One wonders why the journalists being harassed are not being given more space by VOA?  Nick Mangwana is the last person to trust when it comes to unbiased news.  His Government has not even ordered an investigation into who raped, assaulted and tortured the 3 MDC young Ladies)

For years, human rights groups and advocates for free media have classified Zimbabwe as being harsh toward journalists.  The government of longtime president Robert Mugabe was notorious for arresting journalists and shutting down news outlets who published work deemed critical of Mugabe, his allies or his wife, Grace.

When Mnangagwa took power in November 2017, he promised to change that.
But Tabani Moyo, the head of Media Institute of Southern Africa in Zimbabwe, says proposed new media laws are equally bad as the previous ones.

Most of the reforms were thrown out when the bill went before Parliament, which is ruled by Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF party. “This doesn’t show a government which is breaking with the past, but which is intolerant to divergent views, whereby the press is seen as part to contest to power and is treated as such," Moyo said.

Moyo said the arrests of the 15 journalists confirmed their fears that Zimbabwe’s government is not in favor of press freedom.

Joint statement on human rights situation in Zimbabwe

The following statement was issued by Heads of Mission of the Delegation of the European Union, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden and the Heads of Mission of Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America:
The Heads of Mission expect from the Government of Zimbabwe a swift, thorough and credible investigation into the abduction and torture of opposition Member of Parliament Joana Mamombe, along with Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova and allegations of the assault on Nokuthula and Ntombizodwa Mpofu in Bulawayo. The perpetrators of heinous acts of this kind and other human rights violations need to be identified and prosecuted.
The Zimbabwean Constitution prohibits enforced disappearances, torture, violence against women, and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The Heads of Mission exhort Zimbabwean authorities to respect these fundamental rights and full adherence to Zimbabwe’s international human rights obligations.
The Heads of Mission further urge all protagonists to resolve political conflicts through constructive dialogue, and remain clear that international re-engagement is contingent on genuine and sustained implementation of political and economic reform.

Malawi Court Condemns Zim ConCourt Ruling On The 2018 Presidential Election Case

The Court in Malawi has condemned the Zimbabwe Constitutional Court Ruling in Chamisa v Mnangagwa and 24 others.  This will likely be a huge boost to Nelson Chamisa's mantra of, "ZANU PF is illegitimate" and will surely mean ZANU PF will be striking Malawians off their Christmass card list this year.

Sadly, it also shows just how much ZANU PF members and their leadership do not listen as it is often said that, only those that really care for you will tell you when you are wrong.

@Conradbonapart wrote on twitter, "That Malaba ruling will never be used as court reference in any english court globally. Common sense princples were ignored."
"This Court is alive to the fact that it is rare that elections are set aside on light or trivial grounds considering what goes on in the preparation for elections. (See Col (Rtd) Kizza Besigye v Yoweri Museveni and Electoral Commission 2001 Election Petition No. 1 of 2001 (Supreme Court of Uganda). Accordingly, this led the courts to develop a legal philosophy that even if there is non-compliance as long as results are not affected that results of the election will not be annulled. (See. The Zimbabwean case of Chamisa v Mnangagwa and 24 Others (CCZ 42/18) [2018] ZWCC (24 August 2018). That philosophy suggests that whatever serious electoral irregularities may have been committed, and an election will be allowed to stand as long as the petitioners do not demonstrate that the non-compliance or irregularities affect the number of votes in the election. This is the quantitative approach to resolving electoral disputes in the courts.
The Zimbabwe case of Chamisa v Mnangagwa and 24 Others (supra) seems to suggest that as a general rule an election will not be annulled if a breach of the law did not affect the election result. We have doubts that this would be a good approach, particularly where serious breach of the law is involved. What if the numbers themselves are as a result of an inaccurate counting, intimidation, fraud or corruption? Surely, for an election to be truly free, fair and credible it must be conducted in full compliance with the constitution and applicable electoral laws."

Read only| Open letter to President Emmerson Mnangagwa from Beatrice Mtetwa On May 19, 2020

By Beatrice Mtetwa

Sir, I address you, not because you personally abducted, tortured and sexually abused JOANA MAMOMBE, CECILIA CHIMBIRI and NETSAI MAROVA. Neither do I address you because I know or am in other way connected with the three young women. I address you as the head of all government institutions in Zimbabwe. I address you as the man who appointed each one of the persons who head our government institutions.

In particular, you appointed the Commander of our Defence Forces, the Commissioner General of our Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Minister in Charge of our State Security, the Director General of Our Central Intelligence Organization.

All four appointees are supposed to be non-partisan and to protect Zimbabweans from both external and internal attacks on their persons, property, integrity and to at all times ensure that rights granted by the Constitution are enjoyed by all.

Instead of protecting the three young women, appointees instead allowed the violation of their persons and their rights in the most despicable of ways. I therefore address you, your Excellency, not only as someone who lives in Zimbabwe, but as a woman, a mother to Zimbabwean children who include a daughter who could easily have been anyone of the three young women so despicably abused by agents of your appointees.

I also wish to point out the gendered nature of these violations where it is clear that these women were targeted for these violations because they are women who have chosen to participate in the country’s politics. The attacks on them is therefore clearly designed to dissuade young women from engaging in politics outside of the ruling party.

Allow me to directly address your appointees through you, Sir. To you General Valerio Sibanda, in your capacity as head of our Defence Forces, if anyone of your men and women were involved in the despicable acts perpetrated against these three young women, you are as responsible as if you held that gun that was used to simulate sexual intercourse.

If none of your members were involved, as head of the Defence Forces, which is associated with guns, you have the obligation to prove through a public and inclusive process that the members of the Defence Forces had nothing to do with these abominable acts.

And as a member of JOC, you have the added responsibility to ensure that none in the defence, security and police sectors do anything that puts the government of Zimbabwe into disrepute.
So, even if none of your members were directly involved in these atrocities, you still have the obligation to ensure that those responsible for the abduction, torture and other abuses these young women were subjected to are publicly brought to account for their actions.

Anything less from you will taint you with every indignity and illegality these three suffered. The goodwill that the people of Zimbabwe showed to members of the army that memorable day in November, 2017 requires that your reciprocate and reassure Zimbabweans that you still lead a people’s army. That the country is still awaiting for reprisals against members of the army who gunned down unnarmed civilians remains a sore point for Zimbabweans.

It is time that you are seen to be a People’s Army. And to you, vaMatanga, our esteemed Commissioner General of Police, you inherited an organization which had become so discredited that it was no different from a rag-tag police force for an aspiring government in a war torn country hoping to take over power.

Only, it was worse in that it was actually the government’s police force, which in terms of the Constitution should be a Police Service. So discredited it was that even his Excellency, your boss, who had not committed any crime, could not trust it and the courts to protect him. He felt safer in the hands of the police of neighbouring countries.

As a Police Service, you have an obligation to protect and secure the lives of those who live in Zimbabwe. You have an obligation to maintain law and order by ensuring that abductors are hunted down like the scum that they are.

You, Commissioner General, will remember the jubilation of November, 2017. You will recall how the police, as law enforcement agents, played second fiddle to members of the army. So discredited were the police that they were wholly identified with the fallen regime. Is this the legacy you want to leave as Commissioner General of the Second Republic?

Is this what the New Dispensation means for your police? Sir, these three young women were taken at a roadblock manned by uniformed police and were taken to your top Central police station after they were “arrested”. They were under your roof. No Zimbabwean will believe that they were released to unknown third parties by your police without any due process requiring identification.

As a former public prosecutor, I am aware, Sir, that the command structure within the police is such that none of your underlings within the police would have released the three to the abductors and torturers without the specific say so of their immediate superiors.

Furthermore, every occurrence at a police station is recorded and you owe the nation an explanation why their attendance at Central Police Station would not have been recorded in the Police Occurrence Book. And none of their superiors would have authorised their release to third parties without first conferring with those above them.

Unless you want to tell the nation you are merely a seat warmer, the buck stops with you on how “arrested” persons were unlawfully removed from your premises by abductors and torturers. Unless you therefore tell the nation how this happened, you are directly responsible and complicit in everything that happened to them.
To you, Minister of State Security, Mr Owen “Mudha” Ncube, your ascension to this throne was controversial. So, prove the country wrong by coming out and openly accepting any role your agents might have played in this. If your agents were not involved, all the more reason to leave no stone unturned in unravelling who the abductors and torturers are.

You can even resort to a few fall guys who will take the can and be pardoned thereafter as has happened many times before. At least it would look as if you care. And you need that little respect where a few people might think that you are a good guy. Intelligence Services in terms of our Constitution are supposed to be non-partisan.

That the abused women are members of the opposition requires that you scrupulously investigate this matter so that any suggestions or perceptions that opposition party women politicians were targeted is dispelled. Your Excellency, this is also to your comrades who were there when the second republic came into being. I remember the abuse the leaders of the War Veterans Association were subjected to in the run up to the removal of the old dispensation.

I remember being asked by one of the Comrades to help in the trumped-up charges brought against them for exercising freedoms granted to them by the constitution. I remember how it was clear that your comrade Victor Matemadanda, now Deputy Minister of Defence, was targeted for elimination on a contrived night time trip to Gokwe on the pretext of going to search his house.
I remember how we resolved that we would drive in a convoy to wherever the comrade was taken regardless of the time of day. I remember how our team resolved to stay with him at the Law & Order Section all night if that was necessary and indeed I got home at 01.00hrs that night after following the police to where he was finally lodged that night and ensuring his name was entered in the detention book. Comrade Matemadanda, do you remember that night?

Do you remember how we taught you and comrade Headman Moyo how to walk when manacled together with leg irons? Do you remember Dave Drury tying your one leg to that of Comrade Headman Moyo’s leg with his tie and the two of you practising to walk whilst carrying your plastic of provisions? Do you, in the War Veterans Association believe that this was done so that your dispensation could abduct, torture and abuse young women exercising the same rights that the old dispensation harassed and arrested you for?
Would you be alive today if we had not kept vigil with you that night to avoid harm befalling you? And my old friend Oppah, how would you feel if your two daughters were subjected to this treatment by any group that comes in as another new dispensation? And yes, comrade Monica, is this what you and Chris were ostracised for in the run up to the coup that was not a coup?

And to all you mothers in the New Dispensation, is this what you are all about? Is this the legacy that you want to leave as the Second Republic? Kirsty Coventry, you are the Minister responsible for Youth. The abducted and tortured young women are youths who fall under your protection.

Your silence in the face of the abduction and torture of youthful young women is astounding, as is the silence of the Minister of Women’s Affairs. Is this what you want your child to think you stood for when she is old enough to read about these occurrences under your watch? And to the entire Zanu (PF), especially the Women’s League, is this who you are? Is this what you fought for?

Is this what you want your legacy to be? And Your Excellency, this is to your wife, the Mother of the Nation, the Angel of Mercy. Amai, tinokutenda nemabasa ako emufushwa. We now appeal for your visibility as our Angel of Mercy, your daughters have been abducted, tortured and abused in ways that as a mother you would not want to hear.

Why have you been silent in the face of such despicable acts against your daughters? Why have we not seen you with sadza nemufushwa, or even potatoes and vegetables to visit these children who need your intervention?

Surely, you and your foundation are appalled at this egregious breach of our constitution. Isn’t the very reason you visibly care for women and children because you care for their well being? Can a tortured and abused women-folk be sustained by mufushwa alone?

The nation awaits your signal on how we should respond to one of the most despicable acts of the New Dispensation.
I am sincerely yours,

Beatrice Mtetwa

3 Female Youths Raped in Zimbabwe for protesting against hunger then;

ZANU PF Rapes those who Protest when hungry then;
all the Presidents Men, Deny, Deny, Deny.

Despite the overwhelming video evidence of the aggrieved young ladies, in the end one has to ask the question, what will happen next as acts like these have caused rebellions and Wars in the past.

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) MP Joanna Mamombe and two young MDC Youth female members Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, were raped, tortured and sodomised for; Protesting For FOOD.

Confirmation and evidence was provided by mistake, by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), which is a known state proxy.  Their arrest, was then later denied by the same ZRP at the behest of the Ministry of information.  Also by mistake, further evidence was provided by the Herald.  Coincidentally, the Herald is a Government publication that publishes articles prepared by pro Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) journalists.  It therefore seems, the Kleptocratic ZANU PF regime cannot help itself but do the only thing it knows best.  Which is to, "Deny, Deny, and Deny."

The saddest part is that, the three very young ladies were crying for food.  They were protesting for food.  Further, whilst there is no formal police charge yet against the MDC MP, the MDC Youth Vice Chairperson and the MDC Deputy Youth Organising Secretary respectively.   There are reports from credible publishing houses that the police are still considering charging them all for, “allegedly attending an illegal protest”.

Sadly though, ZANU PF has a habit of committing heinous acts against women and girls, through its state and non state proxies, then shortly after that, deny it all, as if nothing, I mean absolutely nothing ever happened.  The deny, deny and deny, mantra is always the ZANU PF default go to place.  Below are a few examples of when the same deny, deny and deny mantra has been used by ZANU PF,

ZANU PF thug (as described by Tim Sebastian) and perpetual liar (as described by ZHRO) Information Secretary Nick Mangwana, ZANU PF Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and ZANU PF member missing a cerebral cortex (as described by Tenai Biti) Deputy Information Minister Energy Mutodi, are without doubt arch enablers of the brutality that is being meted and hidden by the proxies at the behest of the Mnangwgwa regime.

In the event of Nuremburg type trials, for ZANU PF’s atrocities, these three need to be at the top of the list without the ability of being given asylum in any country in the world for the gross human rights abuses and for condoning human rights abuses in Zimbabwe and beyond.

If the three young ladies, do end up being charged, one can only wonder what will happen, in the end.  Will the MDC youths retaliate, or will they be cowed?

All the above is happening whilst firstly, the ZANU PF courts are enabling the dismantling of the opposition MDC Alliance, by trying to turn back time on a mute legally void, but politically valid point (according to ZANU PF), (only in Zimbabwe will Judges try to play God by turning back time).  Secondly, whilst the speaker of parliament is, lending a hand in the splitting of the MDC, by aiding in the recalling of 3 MDC Alliance MP’s.  Yet at the same time, the political party that is doing the recalling is MDC-T, which is recalling MDC Alliance MP’S.

In my humble opinion, if ZANU PF does manage to succeed in the dismantling of MDC and the actual main challenger to Mnangagwa, only one two things could happen within Zimbabwe.  This event, especially because it involves 3 very young ladies, and one of them is a sitting Member of the Zimbabwe Parliament, the MDC youths, who are said to outnumber the ZANU PF youths by far, will either cower to the regime, or be fermented into a proper rebellion like never seen before.

The sad irony is that, when Smith behaved in the same way, it led to the second Chimurenga.
In conclusion, if the captured courts are halted from enabling the dismantling of the MDC, it will no doubt show how fret the Mnangagwa regime is of a real and actual uprising.
