With Rampant Child Marriages and a Dead 14 year old Child Bride, E.D. Mnangagwa chooses Heroes Day to reward his wife for her so called fine and stellar work as a philanthropist. Sadly no-one in the Government has dared to say anything about this award. No one has been bold enough to raise the fact that the Government is still to deal with the high prevalence of child marriages and young girls turning to prostitution in Zimbabwe. It seems no one has advised the President that it might be too soon. Or could it be that for the Government, this is now NORMAL?
One can not write about this in a fictional novel, as it would be extremely difficult to imagine that this is happening in a country that is not at war. Nor would it be possible to write this in comic book strip, as the scenes are way too harrowing, but in Zimbabwe this is real life for thousands of abandoned children.
There have been numerous reports of child marriages in Zimbabwe, which unfortunately have gone uninvestigated. It seems the regime is mute and has turned a blind eye to this horrible and barbaric practice.
This award ceremony has been carried out on Heroes’ Day, a day that is meant to be used to celebrate and remember the sacrifices that were made by those who fought in the liberation war. One wonders if this is what the sacrifice was four. Especially since there are many young girls and boys who went to fight on the front lines as they were sick and tired of being oppressed and used by the former Smith regime of the then Rhodesia.
One would have expected this day two have been left to the heroes and heroines instead of giving accolades to somebody who keeps mute in the face of the suffering of the most vulnerable in society. In fact it is less than 2 weeks since the death of a young 14 year old Girl who died trying to give birth.
The United Nations has condemned the practise of child marriage in Zimbabwe following the death of a 14-year-old girl at a church shrine, whilst she was trying to give birth to her child. The incident has caused outrage among citizens and rights activists, but no arrest has been made.
Allegations are that the Church is very close to the Executive Branch and the Government.
